Petrock Holiday Cottages - Accessibility Guide

Introduction

We have two self-catering cottages, Primrose Cottage which is two bedroomed and one bathroom and Oak Tree Cottage which is two bedroomed with two bathrooms (one being en-suite). Both cottages are set over two floors and Oak Tree Cottage can comfortably accommodate a fifth bed suitable for a child.

Petrock Holiday Cottages are old, stone built, converted farm buildings set on the outskirts of Newton St Petrock village surrounded by countryside. The conversion focused on the use of quality hardwoods and natural material furnishings. The property is owned by the Goldsmith family who live on site.

Pre Arrival

We have a website with full details about the cottages and access to our property.  Guests will be sent directions and arrival information with receipt of full payment.  Bookings can be made online, or by phone.

There is a farm shop nearby selling milk, groceries, bread and home made cakes.  Saunders Garage shop sells newspapers, bread and other basics.  Deliveries from some major supermarkets can be arranged, please contact us for more information.

Arrival and Car Parking Facilities

Turn off the main road (A388) half a mile down the lane where we can be found on the left hand side, sign-posted Petrock Holiday Cottages.  Turn into the site and each cottage has its own free allocated parking space on the right hand side, in front of the cottages.

Entry into your accommodation is at the back of the cottages, via a key safe (code sent out when full payment is received), 15metres from the parking bay.

Transport

Unfortunately we are not well served by public transport and we recommend that you have use of a car.

The nearest train station is Barnstaple (20 miles).

Excellent road access via M5 and A30.

Local buses are infrequent but can be caught from the nearest main road at the top of our lane to Bude and Barnstaple ( outside  Woodford Bridge Country Club).

Taxi services are based in Holsworthy and Torrington.

Access to Cottages

This is via a gravel path and unfortunately, due to the restrictions of the site and the old buildings, neither of our cottages are suitable for wheelchair users or for those whom steps are a major problem.

Access to Cottage Gardens

The cottage gardens are accessed via 6 steps and beyond a fenced off area there is a stream with further steps down to jetty with a seating area. Whilst most of the garden is level, there are some sloping banks with a minimum 5’ drop down to our boundary and stream.  Children must be supervised at all times.

There are also traditional retaining Devon dry stone walls which are unsuitable for climbing on.

There are garden chairs and tables to use (other than winter).  There are two gas barbecues available for guests.  There is additional seating on the jetty next to the stream.

Recycling Centre/Bike and Garden Stores

This outbuilding for the recycling and storage is situated 6 metres from the cottages and each store has one step up (30cm).

Waste Bins

General waste is situated at the front of the site down a gentle slope, 15m from the cottages.

The Cottages

Both cottages are centrally heated and there are no open fires.  Light switches and door handles are set at standard heights.

The cottages have hypoallergenic bedding and cotton linens.  Bath towels are provided (not beach or dog towels).

Our cottages are strictly non-smoking and we do allow pets by prior arrangement at an extra charge and subject to availability.

The cottages are fully equipped with quality crockery, cutlery, cookware and tableware.  We also provide washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, cloths and tea towels.  The appliances are all electric.

Both cottages have WiFi, Smart T.V.’s, Roberts DAB alarm/radio, and DVD players.

Each cottage has its own store with a full size freezer, baby equipment, vacuum cleaner, broom.  This is directly at the back, attached to each cottage and has one small step (10cm) to enter.

Oak Tree Cottage

Distance from parking bay is 14 metres and there is one threshold step into cottage. The cottage is on two levels.  You enter the kitchen and there is a door through to the lounge/diner.  The lounge has one set of French doors leading to a decked area for eating/relaxing. The floors downstairs are slate with two rugs which are held down by furniture.

There are carpeted stairs from the kitchen to the first floor bedrooms and bathrooms.  The master bedroom has a king sized bed with attached en-suite shower room with a walk in shower (small step into it) and a separate family bathroom has a bath with shower over.  There is a twin room with two 3 foot beds and space for an additional folding guest bed. The landing and twin bedroom have original old, low beams so care needs to be taken when walking underneath.

Primrose Cottage

Distance from parking bay is 13 metres and there is one threshold step into cottage. The cottage is on two levels. You enter the open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area. The floors downstairs are slate and one rug is under a coffee table.  There are two sets of French doors, one of which leads out to a decked area for eating/relaxing.

Upstairs leads to two bedrooms and one family bathroom (has bath with shower over). The bathroom has one low beam, where care needs to be taken. The floors are carpeted and the double room has a Juliette Balcony overlooking the garden, which is approached by French doors kept locked (key nearby).  Children must be supervised at all times near balcony.  The twin bedded room has two 3 foot beds and space for an additional folding guest bed.
